JAMB: IGP orders officers to go after scammers of UTME candidates
The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has directed the Nigeria Police Force National Cyber Crime Centre (NPF-NCCC) to target individuals who create fake websites to defraud Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) candidates. This directive was announced by the Force Public Relations Officer, Mr. Olumuyiwa Adejobi, during a joint news conference with the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) Public Relations Officer, Dr. Fabian Benjamin, in Abuja.Adejobi cautioned candidates preparing for the 2024 UTME to be wary of fake sites. The 2024 UTME is scheduled to run from Friday, 19th April to Monday, 29th April, 2024.
He stated that the joint news conference was prompted by reports of several fake websites aimed at misleading and defrauding candidates during the printing of the 2024 UTME Notification Slip, which contains vital exam details.
Adejobi disclosed that the IGP has instructed the NPF-NCCC to pursue scammers and fraudsters involved in cyber-related crimes and the creation of phishing sites/portals. These fake sites are designed to trick candidates into providing personal information such as registration numbers, email addresses, and phone numbers, which can be exploited for malicious purposes.
He emphasized the commitment of both JAMB and the Nigeria Police Force to condemning these fraudulent activities and ensuring the protection of candidates' interests and the integrity of the examination process.
